M.Sc. in Petroleum Geoscience

Basic skills in geology and geophysics are of fundamental importance in exploration for oil and gas, as well as enhanced recovery of these resources in an economic and safe manner. Geophysical methods are used to reveal the geological structures of the subsurface, including type of lithology and pore fluid. This is achieved by studying how seismic waves, generated at the surface, are transmitted and reflected from various geological interfaces. Geology implies to study rocks both implicitly, by, for example, studying seismic sections, or explicitly, by analysing cores from wells. Petroleum geophysics covers the mathematical description of the physical concepts behind elastic wave propagation, methods for seismic data acquisition and processing, and interpretation and modelling of seismic data. Structural geology and sedimentology provide the basis for understanding the geological framework in petroleum geoscience. Adequate skills in mathematics, physics and informatics may be of support in parts of the study. 

The wide spectrum of courses offered shall provide the students the skills coherent with the requirements of the industry for petreoleum geoscientific work.
